How to help children develop their attention?

Updated: Oct 30, 2023

Perhaps you have already met a child that does not listen to you or that he/she has difficulty concentrating.

The reactions we have in these kinds of situations are sometimes reduced to “it’s his character”, “he’s hyperactive”.

If it is possible that your child is “hyperactive” or has an attention disorder (ADHD), it is important to remember that only a psychological or evaluation allows it to be diagnosed.

Whatever the child's level of attention difficulty, it can be worked on, gradually and at their own pace. The methods I use come from nature pedagogies, the development of mindfulness, yoga and sophrology. Whatever the methods used, I choose them according to the age, needs and level of development of the child.

What are my methods of supporting children?

I gradually lead the child to focus on his sensations, one sense at a time and in a playful way. I sometimes use sight, hearing, smell, touch and why not taste!

Why this technique? by focusing on one sense at a time, I lead the child to ignore the rest around him. Children's attention difficulties are often caused or even accentuated by external stimulations which are too strong for children's immature brains. We therefore seek to soothe the mind of the child.

I never force children's attention, which is why I plan moments of physical expression or motor games to adapt to their rhythm.

I play with emotions . The objective? Help children be able to express their feelings and needs. It is not because a child knows how to speak that he knows how to express his/her emotions. This can be learned (preferably by playing 😊) and it takes around 26 years (or more if you have never learned how to do it)!

Depending on the children's needs, I offer artistic or relaxation workshops during the accompaniment.

What are my methods of supporting parents and education professionals?

I listen kindly, attentively and without judgment to parents and professionals. We discuss emotions and felt needs. Accompaniments are moments of sharing and support.

Since each parent and each story is unique, I don't have a method-type. Parenting support is being built step-by-step with each parent while respecting their background, their needs and their values.

The same for education professionals, support is built with the professionals according to the needs expressed during the meetings.
